how I got rejected, how I met new people, and how, more than anything else,

I studied urban planning, and that was my undergraduate course.
我学习了城市规划，这是我的本科专业课程。
I always wanted to study abroad, not because I was a fan of higher education or I loved studying,
我一直都想出国留学，但并不是因为我对高等教育特别感兴趣，或者因为我热爱学习。
but because I wanted to broaden my horizons, which means I wanted to experience life outside of my comfort zone.
但因为我希望拓宽自己的视野，也就是说我想体验一下舒适区之外的生活。
I wanted to meet new people, to get new ideas, and to add to my life experiences.
我想结识新朋友，获取新的想法，并丰富我的人生阅历。
So, I started applying for different courses at different universities.
于是，我开始向不同大学的各类课程申请入学。
I applied for NTNU University in Norway, Helsinki University in Finland, Polytechnic University in Milan,
我申请了挪威的NTNU大学、芬兰的赫尔辛基大学以及意大利米兰的理工大学。
Italy, and Stuttgart University in Germany among many other universities.
意大利的许多大学，以及德国斯图加特大学等众多其他高校也都参与了这项研究。
And to tell you the truth, my grades from my undergrad were not very good, because while I was a student,
说实话，我本科阶段的成绩并不理想。因为在读书期间……
I had to work my way through university.
我不得不通过自己的努力来完成大学学业。
Work my way through university means I had to have a job in order to finance my studies.
为了完成大学学业，我必须边工作边学习，这样才能负担自己的学费和生活费用。
I needed to earn money as I was a student, and because I had to work my way through university,
作为一名学生，我需要赚钱；因为我要靠自己的努力来完成大学学业。
I didn't have enough time to study for my exams.
我没有足够的时间来准备考试。
So, my grades were not very good.
我的成绩并不是很好。
I applied for four universities, and the first university which replied back to me was NTNU in Norway,
我申请了四所大学，第一所回复我的是位于挪威的挪威科技大学（NTNU）。
and it was a rejection.
那是一次拒绝。
Yes, I got rejected because my grades were not good.
是的，我被拒绝了，因为我的成绩不够好。
I fell short of the requirements.
我没有达到相关要求。
To fall short of the requirements, it means you did not have all of the things they asked for.
未能满足这些要求，意味着你没有提供他们所要求的所有内容。
For me, it was my grades.
对我来说，关键在于我的成绩。
They were okay, they were standard, but they demanded very high grades.
这些课程还算不错，属于常规课程范畴，不过对学生的成绩要求非常高。
So, that was my first rejection.
这就是我第一次遭遇拒绝的经历。
And to tell you the truth, when you are rejected for something, for anything,
说实话，当你因为某件事（或者任何事情）而被拒绝时……
you take it personally and it affects yourself confidence.
你把别人的话当成了针对你个人的批评，这影响了你的自信心。
You feel like you are not good enough, and that's a very bad position to be in.
你觉得自己不够好，这种心态非常糟糕。
But honestly, that was my only rejection, because after that, the other three universities
但说实话，那是我唯一一次被拒绝的经历；因为在那之后，其他三所大学都录取了我。
responded positively.
作出了积极的回应。
I was offered a place in those three universities, but that is not the end.
我收到了这三所大学的录取通知，但事情还没有结束。
That's just the beginning of the hard part, because what's next?
这才只是艰难阶段的开始，因为接下来又会是什么呢？
When you get an admission letter, the next step is to pay the fees.
当你收到录取通知书后，下一步就是缴纳相关费用。
