From Muggle to Multilingual: Harry Potter as the Portal to Your Target Language · One Word at a Time
通过分析《哈利波特与魔法石》各章节的新词数量,揭示如何高效积累词汇。适合练习词汇量和阅读理解,适合不同阶段的语言学习者。
This chart shows us the number of new words in each chapter of the English version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
该图表显示了《哈利·波特与魔法石》英文版每一章中新增单词的数量。
And this data tells us a lot about how to approach learning a language, whether you're a beginner or stuck somewhere in the intermediate plateau.
这些数据为我们提供了很多关于如何学习语言的启示,无论你是初学者,还是处于中级学习阶段但遇到困难的人。
Since language learners, including myself, love reading Harry Potter in their target language,
由于语言学习者(包括我自己在内)都喜欢用目标语言阅读《哈利·波特》系列书籍,
let's explore three highlights of this data to help improve how you learn and grow your vocabulary.
让我们来探讨这些数据中的三个关键点,以帮助你更好地学习并扩大词汇量。
And then at the end of the video, we'll even explore what happens if you read the books in the series back to back.
在视频的最后,我们还会探讨一下:如果你将这些系列中的书籍按顺序连贯地读一遍,会发生什么情况。
Let's say you don't know anything about
假设你对某件事一无所知……
your target language and decide, I'm going to learn all of my vocabulary from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
你需要确定自己的目标语言,然后做出相应的决定。我打算通过《哈利·波特与魔法石》这本书来学习所有的词汇。
You can see here that each chapter has roughly 4 to 6 ,000 total words.
从这里可以看出,每一章的字数大约在 4000 到 6000 之间。
But this chart shows you the number of unique new words that you'll encounter in each chapter.
不过,这张图表可以让你了解到在每一章中会遇到的独特新单词的数量。
You'll see that these numbers start high, then taper off, and go down to a lower, non -zero steady state.
你会发现,这些数值起初很高,随后逐渐下降,最终稳定在一个较低但非零的水平上。
Let's make this a little bit clearer.
让我们把这件事解释得更清楚一些吧。
This tall bar for chapter one includes words like Harry, go, the, and school.
第一章中的这个长文本条包含了诸如“Harry”(哈利)、“go”(去)、“the”(这)以及“school”(学校)等词汇。
And while these words also show up in many of the later chapters,
虽然这些话也出现在后面的许多章节中,
they don't count towards the height of these bars because they're already counted for chapter one.
这些部分并不计入这些栏的高度计算中,因为它们在第一章中就已经被计算过了。
In the later chapters, you have less common words making up these increasingly smaller bars,
在后面的章节中,构成这些越来越小的数据条的词汇会变得更加少见(即这些词汇的使用频率更低)。
so things like centaur and checkmate.
比如半人马(这个角色)以及“将死”(这个游戏术语)之类的东西。
Rather than just thinking of this as the number of new words per chapter,
我们不应该仅仅将这个数字理解为每章中新出现的单词数量而已。
the height of each bar could also
每个条形的高度也可以……
be interpreted as the amount of effort it will take to get through each page because you'll have to look up more words.
这可以被理解为完成每一页内容所需付出的努力程度——因为你需要查阅更多的单词(即需要花费更多的时间来理解这些单词)。
As you go through the book, you'll
在阅读这本书的过程中,你会……
have more words per sentence that you're already familiar with, giving you more context to help you stay engaged with the story.
每个句子中使用的、你已熟悉的词汇数量更多,这为故事提供了更多的背景信息,有助于你持续保持对故事的关注(即保持阅读的兴趣)。
Zooming out on our overall pattern here, we have our first lesson.
从更宏观的角度来看整个情况,我们得到了第一个重要的启示(或教训)。
Yes, you will have an initial hill to climb, but it does get easier.
是的,一开始你可能会遇到一些困难(就像需要攀登一座小山一样),但之后情况会逐渐变得容易起来。
For Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,
关于《哈利·波特与魔法石》……
that hill begins to even out after around five chapters are about a third of the way through the book,
大约在第五章之后,那个山坡的坡度开始变得平缓一些了;此时书已经读到了大约三分之一的内容。
and there's a similar pattern for other books.
其他书籍也呈现出类似的规律(或模式)。
One important note here is that you can acquire the vocabulary how you'd like.
这里有一个重要的需要注意的地方:你可以按照自己喜欢的方式来学习词汇。
If you want to use physical or digital note cards like Anki,
如果你想使用像 Anki 这样的实体或数字笔记卡片工具,
or you can just rely on the fact that after encountering a word five or ten times in context,
或者你也可以简单地相信这样一个事实:当某个单词在上下文中出现了五次或十次之后,
you'll begin to pick it up.
你会逐渐掌握它的使用方法的。
I'll explore in a future video what
我会在未来的视频中探讨这个问题。
this curve or what this process of
这条曲线,或者说这个过程……
reading a book would look like if you already had the 500 most common or 1 ,000 or 5 ,000 most common words in a language.
如果你已经掌握了某种语言中最常见的 500 个、1000 个或 5000 个词汇,那么阅读书籍的过程就会变得非常简单(因为你能够理解书中的大部分内容)。
So before we continue with this video,
那么在我们继续观看这个视频之前……

Now let's move on to lesson number two.
现在,让我们继续学习第二课吧。
We'll need to change this bar chart to a cumulative chart showing the number of new words that you've encountered in each of the chapters.
我们需要将这个条形图更改为累积图表,以显示你在每一章中遇到的新单词的数量。
Wow, that tells a very interesting story.
哇,这确实是一个非常有趣的故事。
That looks like a mountain to climb up.
那看起来像是一座难以攀登的山峰。
Again, this is the same data that we saw before just visualized differently,
同样,这些数据与我们之前看到的数据是一样的,只是呈现方式有所不同而已。
