What if your classroom could hold 10 million gallons of water?
Today we're diving in at the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere where whale sharks roam,
science comes alive, and there are some seriously cool careers lurking beneath the surface.
Buckle up because the next 10 minutes we're going all in.
Since opening in 2005, the Georgia Aquarium has grown into one of the world's largest collections of sea life,
from microscopic corals to massive whale sharks, hundreds of marine and freshwater species call this aquarium home.
So what does it take to keep a place like this running or swimming successfully?
Well, allow us to introduce you to an incredibly diverse team of professionals that includes scientists,
biologists, engineers, trainers, and an ocean of other cool careers in some that you, and honestly myself included,
didn't even know existed.
Exhibit A, meet Kimberly Kraft, official title, Aquarist, but I've decided she is the queen of coral conservation.
How did you come to be an Aquarist?
I have a degree in biology and I didn't really know where I wanted to go,
so in the career biology you can go in many different directions.
You can go into research, you can go into aquarium, you can also go into training.
And I did just about every single one of those to get to where I am today.
So luckily I was able to internship here, and then during my internship I was offered a job and I've been here for about eight years.
Do you have a favorite coral?
Oh my gosh, yes I do.
Which one?
So it is over here.
If you'd like to come over to this guy right here, it is called a micromuso.
They can get really fluffy and you can actually see their tentacles out right now ready for me.
If I remember correctly you said I could feed the coral.
You can.
Can I feed the coral?
Yes you can.
Okay.
好的。
All right, here we go.
What would your advice be to anyone out there who thinks, that looks really cool, I want to work in an aquarium someday.
My advice would probably be to keep going.
It was always a thing that I got from a lot of people is saying that it was really hard to get into,
and it is, but it's really rewarding.
So just do as many volunteer opportunities you can do, internships, and eventually you'll get there.
So this is our big reef wall, it is about 164 ,000 gallons,
and it gets still six days out of the week.
Oh my gosh.
Staff divers get in about three times a week and I'm fortunate enough to be one of those divers.
So I do dive regularly in here,
and what my taskar mainly is taking care of the corals that you see down in along the reef wall.
