bbclearningenglish.com So let's hear all about this story.
bbclearningenglish.com 那么,让我们来详细了解一下这个故事吧。
US President Donald Trump has started imposing tariffs on imports into the USA.
美国总统唐纳德·特朗普已经开始对进口到美国的商品征收关税。
Tariffs make imports more expensive - a cost which is often passed on to consumers who have to pay more for imported products.
关税使得进口商品的价格上涨,这种成本通常会转嫁给消费者,使他们不得不为进口产品支付更高的价格。
Now, Donald Trump has imposed 10% tariffs on all Chinese imports into the US.
如今,唐纳德·特朗普对所有从中国进口到美国的商品征收了10%的关税。
He says the Chinese tariffs are a response to the economic situation between the two countries and to help stop drugs coming into the US,
他表示,中国的关税措施是对两国之间经济形势的一种回应,同时也是为了阻止毒品流入美国。
which he partly blames on China.
他将其中一部分原因归咎于中国。
Now, China has said that in response, they will add tariffs onto some American goods.
现在,中国表示作为回应,他们将对部分美国商品加征关税。
Trump has also threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, but these have been suspended, that means delayed,
特朗普还威胁要对加拿大和墨西哥征收25%的关税,但这些关税措施已被暂时搁置(即实施时间被推迟)。
for 30 days.
有效期为30天。
So let's have our first headline.
那么,让我们来看第一个新闻标题吧。
This is from MSN: China announces tit-for-tat tariffs as US levies come into effect.
这条消息来自 MSN:在美国征收关税的措施生效之际,中国宣布将采取报复性措施(即对美国商品征收关税)。
That headline again from MSN: China announces tit-for-tat tariffs as US levies come into effect.
又是那条来自 MSN 的新闻标题:在美国征收关税的举措生效之际,中国宣布将对等措施进行报复(即也征收关税)。
So this headline says China has announced its own tariffs as the US tariffs come into effect, that means start,
这个标题的意思是:在美国的关税措施生效的同时,中国也宣布了自己的关税政策。也就是说,双方的关税措施已经开始实施了。
in China.
在中国。
And we're interested in this expression tit for tat.
我们对这种“以牙还牙”的行为方式很感兴趣。
It's a funny little phrase, Beth, but what does it mean?
这确实是个有趣的小短语,贝丝……但它到底是什么意思呢?
Tit for tat.
以牙还牙。
OK, so this expression describes the following situation: Someone does something bad to someone else, so that person then does something bad in response.
好的,这个表达描述的是以下情况:某人对另一个人做了不好的事情,于是那个人为了报复也做出了不好的行为。
It's retaliation.
这是一种报复行为。
Yes.
是的。
So it's something done intentionally to punish others because they've done something unpleasant to you.
这是一种故意的行为,目的是为了惩罚那些曾经对你做过不愉快事情的人。
So it's used in this headline to mean that China has imposed tariffs on US goods, simply because Trump has imposed tariffs on Chinese goods.
因此,在这个标题中,“中国对美国商品征收关税”这一表述的含义其实只是因为特朗普对中国商品征收了关税而已。
They've announced their own tariffs in retaliation.
作为报复,他们宣布将对进口商品征收自己的关税。
It's tit for tat.
这就是一种以牙还牙的行为。
Now this expression reminds me of being a child, Beth.
贝丝,这个表达让我想起了自己小时候的时光。
If my sister pushed me around, I pushed her back.
如果我姐姐欺负我,我也会反击她。
It was tit for tat.
这就是一种以牙还牙的行为。
And, Neil, I noticed that you didn't make me a coffee this morning like you normally do.
尼尔,我注意到你今天早上没有像往常一样给我泡咖啡。
I think it's tit for tat because I forgot to make you one yesterday.
我觉得这是“以牙还牙”的结果——因为昨天我忘了给你做那个东西。
Absolutely.
当然可以。
We've had tit for tat, which describes an action done as retaliation.
我们之间一直互相报复(即以牙还牙),这种行为本质上属于报复性质的。
For example, you ate the last biscuit, so I'm going to eat your piece of cake.
例如,你吃掉了最后一块饼干,那么我就该吃你那份蛋糕了。
That's tit for tat.
这就是以牙还牙。
