So, let's start today's episode with a noun.
那么,让我们以一个名词开始今天的节目吧。
And it is addiction.
这就是一种上瘾的行为。
Spell this with me, A D D I C T I O N.
跟我一起拼写这个单词:A D D I C T I O N。
Addiction.
成瘾。
Addiction.
成瘾。
Addiction is the inability to stop doing or using something.
成瘾是指无法停止做某件事或使用某种物质的状态。
It's usually used when the thing that you are addicted to is harmful.
这种做法通常用于当你对某种东西上瘾,而这种东西本身具有危害性的情况下。
So, for example, if you over-exercise, then I might say that you are addicted to exercise because you exercise too much.
例如,如果你过度运动,那么我可能会认为你“对运动上瘾了”——因为你运动的时间实在太多了。
If you enjoy smoking lots of cigarettes in a day, and you've struggled to give up even though you know it's bad for your health,
如果你喜欢一天内抽很多烟,并且尽管知道吸烟对健康有害,却仍然难以戒烟……
you're addicted.
你已经上瘾了。
If you drink too much alcohol, then you are addicted.
如果你饮酒过量,那么你就可能对酒精上瘾了。
We can also use addiction occasionally in a positive way, but usually, it just means an excess.
我们偶尔也可以将“上瘾”这一现象用于积极的目的,但大多数情况下,它仅仅表示某种行为或状态的过度或失控。
It means it's too much.
这意味着负担太重了。
Like you might be addicted to a person, you might be addicted to work.
就像你可能会对某个人上瘾一样,你也可能会对工作上瘾。
There's nothing wrong with hard work, but if you can't switch off and enjoy your life outside of work,
努力工作本身并没有什么错,但如果你无法在工作之外放松身心、享受生活的话……
then that becomes problematic.
那么,这就成了一个问题。
So addiction here is an example sentence, "Natalie had bad experiences with gambling addiction."
因此,“成瘾”可以作为一个例句来使用,比如:“娜塔莉在赌博成瘾方面有过不好的经历。
Now, thinking about yourself, your family and your friends.
现在,请想想你自己、你的家人以及你的朋友们。
Do you have any experience of addiction?
你是否有过与成瘾相关的经历?
Perhaps you have your own addiction that you're battling or have
也许你自己也有某种成瘾问题,正在与之作斗争。
battled in the past, or maybe people within your friend circle or within your family have addiction.
过去曾有人与成瘾问题作斗争;或许你的朋友或家人中也有成瘾者。
I can certainly think of a number of people within my circles who deal with addiction.
我当然能想到我周围有不少人正在与成瘾问题作斗争。
Okay, moving on.
好吧,继续下一个话题吧。
Related to the word addiction, we have another noun and it is craving.
与“addiction”(成瘾)这个词相关的,还有一个名词,那就是“craving”(强烈的渴望或瘾)。
Craving.
渴望……
We spell this C R A V I N G.
我们把这个单词拼写为 “CRAVING”。
Craving.
渴望……
Craving.
渴望……
A craving is a very strong feeling of desire, a strong feeling of wanting something.
强烈的渴望是一种非常强烈的欲望感,一种迫切想要得到某物的强烈情绪。
Now I use this word pretty much on a daily basis.
现在,我几乎每天都在使用这个词。
I am always craving for something to eat or drink.
我总是渴望吃点什么或喝点什么。
So lately we have been trying to cut our costs at home in our personal lives.
最近,我们一直在努力降低个人生活中的开支。
And so we've stopped getting our Nespresso coffee pods.
因此,我们不再购买 Nespresso 咖啡胶囊了。
