My name is Anna and you are listening to Week 24, Day One of Your English Five a Day,
我的名字是安娜。你们现在正在收听《Your English Five a Day》节目的第24周、第一天。
the series where we deep-dive into five pieces of vocabulary every day of the working week from Monday to Friday with the aim of
这个系列节目从周一到周五的每一天都会深入探讨五个词汇,目的是……
increasing your active vocabulary.
扩大你的主动词汇量(即那些你能主动使用的词汇)。
So, tune in, make a note and try to use at least one or two of these items on today's list.
那么,请收听节目、做好记录,并尝试在今天的清单中使用至少一两项建议或方法。
We're going to start today with a noun which is gusto.
今天我们先从一个名词开始学习,这个名词就是“gusto”(热情、渴望)。
Gusto.
味道……
We spell this G U S T O.
我们把这个单词拼写为“GUSTO”。
Gusto.
味道。
Gusto.
味道……
Gusto describes a strong and enthusiastic enjoyment of something or an appreciation for something.
Gusto”指的是对某事物强烈的喜爱或热情的欣赏之情。
We often do things with gusto.
我们常常满怀热情地去完成各种事情。
So, if I'm in the kitchen and I'm cooking I'm doing it with a lot of enthusiasm.
那么,如果我在厨房做饭的话,我会充满热情地去完成这项工作。
I'm singing and I'm dancing around the kitchen.
我在厨房里边唱歌、跳舞。
I'm enjoying sprinkling herbs into my pot and stirring it with a big smile on my face.
我很喜欢在花盆里撒上各种香草,然后面带灿烂的笑容去搅拌这些香草。
Then you could say, "Anna is cooking with gusto."
然后你可以说:“安娜正在兴致勃勃地做饭。
So, we often hear it as doing something with gusto.
因此,我们经常将这种行为理解为“满怀热情地去做某事”。
Here's another example sentence, "Sophia tackled the project with gusto, eager to impress her boss."
这是一个另一个例句:“索菲亚满怀热情地投入到这个项目中,渴望给她的老板留下好印象。
What do you do with gusto?
你热衷于做什么?
Perhaps you exercise with gusto.
也许你非常热衷于锻炼身体。
Some people really love going down to the gym or taking part in an exercise class and they really go for it.
有些人非常喜欢去健身房或参加各种锻炼课程,并且他们会全身心地投入到这些活动中去。
Or I'm reminded of an example that I brought up recently about singing in church.
或者,这让我想起了一个我最近提到的例子——关于在教堂里唱歌的事情。
Some people know the songs very well, the hymns.
有些人对这些歌曲(尤其是赞美诗)非常熟悉。
And when you sing in church, there will be those people who have no idea what the song is.
当你在教堂里唱歌时,总会有一些人根本不知道这首歌是在唱什么。
And they're just kind of looking around and humming a little bit.
他们只是四处看看,同时轻轻哼着小曲。
And then there'll be the churchgoers who know the songs inside out and love to sing.
此外,还有一些经常去教堂的人,他们对那些歌曲了如指掌,非常喜欢唱歌。
And they're really, really going for it.
他们真的是全力以赴地在做这件事。
They're singing with gusto.
他们唱得非常投入、充满热情。
Is that you?
那是你吗?
It's certainly me when I know the song.
如果我认识这首歌,那肯定就是我唱的。
I love to sing.
我喜欢唱歌。
So, if I know the song, I'll go for it.
所以,如果我知道这首歌,我就会选择它。
I'll sing with gusto.
我会充满热情地唱歌。
But there are many things that we just do on autopilot that we don't put any additional effort or energy into,
但有很多事情我们只是机械地、不假思索地去做,根本不会投入额外的精力或心思。
but occasionally we'll do something with gusto.
不过偶尔我们也会全情投入地做一些事情。
Next on the list is an idiom and it is on the fly, on the fly.
列表中的下一个项目是一个习语,它的用法是“on the fly”(即即兴地、快速地)。
Let me spell that for you.
让我把那个单词拼写给你听吧。
It's fly as in F L Y.
这里的“fly”就是指真正的“飞行”(fly 的意思)。
On the fly.
边做边想;随机应变。
So, if you're doing something on the fly, then you're doing it very quickly without any planning or preparation,
所以,如果你是在仓促之间做某件事,那么你一定是非常快速地完成了它,而没有任何计划或准备。
