Hello and welcome to The English Like a Native Podcast.
大家好,欢迎收听《像母语一样说英语》(The English Like a Native Podcast)这个播客节目。
My name is Anna and you're listening to Week 11, Day 5 of Your English Five a Day,
我的名字是安娜,你现在正在收听《Your English Five a Day》节目的第11周、第5天的内容。
the series that aims to increase your vocabulary by five pieces every single day of the week, from Monday to Friday.
这个系列旨在帮助你在每周的每一天(从周一到周五)将词汇量增加五个单词。
So, let's kick off today's list.
那么,让我们开始今天的列表吧。
We start with a noun, and it is staycation, staycation.
我们从一个名词开始,那就是“staycation”(居家度假)。
This is something I like to do quite often at the moment.
这是我目前经常喜欢做的事情。
So we spell this S T A Y C A T I O N.
因此,我们将其拼写为“STA Y C A T I O N”。
So, it's very similar to vacation, but this is a staycation and they are related.
其实,这与度假非常相似,只不过这是一种“居家度假”(即不在外出旅行,而是在家中休息和娱乐)。这两种方式是相互关联的。
A staycation is a holiday that you take at home or near your home rather than travelling to another place.
Staycation”(居家度假)是指在自家或离家较近的地方度过假期,而不需要前往其他地方。
So, you stay in your local area.
所以,你还是待在当地的地区。
There's lots of reasons for having a staycation.
选择在家度假有很多原因。
Often it's to do with budget.
通常这与预算有关。
If you have a tight budget, then maybe travelling abroad is not feasible, it's not realistic for you or possible for you.
如果你的预算非常紧张,那么出国旅行可能并不可行,对你来说既不现实也不可能实现。
Or you might have very young children or pets that can't really travel very easily.
或者你可能有年幼的孩子或宠物,他们不太适合长途旅行。
So, staycations can be fun and practical in many situations.
因此,在许多情况下,选择“宅在家里度假”(即不外出旅行)既有趣又实用。
Here's an example sentence.
这是一个例句:
"With the prices of flights increasing so much this year, we've decided to have a staycation instead.
由于今年机票价格大幅上涨,我们决定改为在家度假。
We do live in London, after all, so much to do on our doorstep."
毕竟我们住在伦敦,家门口就有太多有趣的事情可以去做。
Next, we have another noun and it is gamification, gamification.
接下来,我们还有一个名词,那就是“游戏化”(gamification)。
We spell this G A M I F I C A T I O N.
我们把这个词拼写为“GAMIFICATION”。
Gamification.
游戏化(Gamification)。
So, gamification is the practice of making activities more like games, in order to make them more enjoyable,
因此,游戏化(gamification)是指将各种活动设计得更像游戏的做法,目的是让这些活动变得更加有趣、更吸引人。
more interesting.
更有趣了。
So, you'll often see gamification within learning, especially for younger people, for children, gamification is definitely added in children's courses in order to keep them interested,
因此,在学习过程中你经常会看到“游戏化”的应用,尤其是在针对年轻人的教育中。对于儿童来说,课程中肯定会加入游戏元素,以保持他们的学习兴趣。
to reward them for interacting with the learning materials and to allow them to enjoy themselves while learning sometimes quite boring or dry material.
为了奖励他们积极参与学习活动,同时也让他们在学习那些可能相当枯燥或乏味的知识时能够感到乐趣。
Okay, here's an example sentence.
好的,这是一个例句:
"Companies are increasingly using gamification in order to train their employees."
越来越多的公司开始采用游戏化的方式来培训员工。
Next on the list is a verb and it is overlook, overlook.
列表中的下一个词是一个动词,它的意思是“忽视”(overlook)。
We spell this O V E R L O O K.
我们把这个单词拼写为“O V E R L O O K”。
Overlook.
overlook(意为“忽视;忽略”;也可指建筑物中的观景台)
To overlook something is to fail to notice or consider something or someone.
忽视某件事,就是没有注意到或没有考虑某件事或某个人。
So, if you just don't notice something or think about something, that could be important, perhaps, then you have overlooked it.
因此,如果你没有注意到某些事情,或者没有去思考那些可能很重要的事情,那么你可能就忽略了它们。
For example, if I am choosing someone to be on my football team and I'm looking at everyone in the room,
例如,如果我正在挑选一名成员加入我的足球队,并且正在观察房间里的每一个人……
but there's one person who is sitting on a chair in the corner for some reason, and I just fail to spot them.
不过有一个人不知为何坐在角落里的椅子上,而我竟然完全没有注意到他们。
I just don't even realise they're there.
我甚至都没有意识到它们的存在。
So I'm looking at everyone who's standing up and in fact, the person sitting on a chair in the corner is David Beckham.
我正在看着所有站起来的人;实际上,坐在角落里椅子上的人就是大卫·贝克汉姆。
So, I would be completely stupid to overlook that person because that person probably would be the best person to choose for my football team.
因此,如果我忽视了那个人,那简直太愚蠢了——因为那个人很可能是最适合加入我的足球队的成员。
But if I don't spot them, if I just don't even consider them, then I've overlooked them.
但如果我没有发现它们,甚至根本没有考虑过它们,那么我就等于忽视了它们。
And that person might be quite upset that I've overlooked them.
那个人可能会因为我忽略他们而感到非常沮丧。
Have you ever been overlooked in the past?
你过去有没有被忽视过?
