  1. Hi!

  2. You’re on a rock.

  3. Floating in space.

  4. Surrounded by more rocks.

  5. And gas.

  6. And a bunch of nothing, mainly.

  7. Oh hey, look at that, the rocks are going around the gas.

  8. Hold on, what the heck, is going on here?

  9. To understand, let’s look a little bit of Physics.

  10. Wait, did I say a little bit?

  11. To find out what kind of magic this is, we’ll have to go back in time.

  12. Okay, not that far.

  13. Stop!

  14. Yeah.

  15. That’s perfect.

  16. This is gravity guy.

  17. But most people call him “Isaac Newton”.

  18. One important thing he said is that Force equals mass times acceleration.

  19. Now what do all these words even mean?

  20. Force is just a push or pull on something, in a certain direction.

  21. Mass tells you how much of something there is, and it’s also a measure of inertia, but we’ll get to that later,

  22. and acceleration is the derivative of velocity with respect to time, but that’s too many big words for my taste,

  23. so let’s just say it’s how fast velocity is changing.

  24. The key takeaway is that if you apply a Force to a fixed mass, you get a predictable amount of acceleration.

  25. If you know all the forces acting

  26. on a basketball mid-air, you can predict with 100% certainty if the ball will go in the hoop or your neighbours windshield.

  27. “Whoa, did an apple just fall on my head?”

  28. Yes Newton, it did.

  29. “That must have happened for a reason” said Newton, as he discovered that two masses attract one another,

  30. making the apple fall.

  31. Yes, even you, no matter how ugly you think you are, attract pretty much the whole universe, at least a little bit.

  32. Hey, can you put that on paper?

  33. “yup” said Newton, who gave us the Law of Universal Gravitation.

  34. In other words, how much two bodies pull on each other, given their mass and distance, times a constant.

  35. Bigger mass?

  36. Bigger Pull.

  37. Bigger distance?

  38. Smaller pull.

  39. Actually, a lot smaller pull.

  40. You see, the as the distance increases, the Force gets smaller by the square.
