You know, I think the biggest mistake that students make when listening to English is, sometimes, they try to understand every single word.

And you can't.

If you do that, you get lost quickly, you can't keep up, and then you give up.

You must go beyond individual words, right?

The secret, the secret, the one thing you should do is always focus on the gist first.
秘诀就在于：你应该始终首先关注事情的核心要点（即“精髓”）。
The gist is the overall idea, right?
关键在于这个整体的想法，对吧？
Just try to understand the overall general idea.
试着理解整个大致的思路或概念就可以了。
How can you do that?

Focus on the stressed words in a text, or in a sentence.

These are the key ones that you really need in order to understand what someone is saying.

Teachers, we call this sentence stress, right?

So sentence stress refers to the words we stress in a sentence.
句子重音指的是我们在句子中强调的词语。
Surprise.
惊喜！
We stress the most important words, usually the nouns, the verbs, the adjectives, adverbs, not usually prepositions or pronouns or question words, right?
我们会重点强调那些最重要的词语，通常是名词、动词、形容词和副词，而介词、代词或疑问词通常不会被重点强调，对吧？
Okay?
好的吗？
For example, "I live in a town near London."
例如：“我住在伦敦附近的一个小镇上。
Live, the verb, town, the noun, London, a noun, a proper noun,
Live”（动词）；“town”（名词）；“London”（名词，专有名词）。
a real noun.
一个真正的名词（即不可数名词）。

So why is this important?

Because not all languages do this.

(clears throat) So in that sentence, right, "I live in a town near London," you can hear the rhythm,

"I live in a town near London," dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, right?

Now, we don't go around speaking like this all the time.
