Some words are tricky to learn because they follow different patterns.
有些单词很难学习,因为它们的发音规则(即发音模式)各不相同。
Hi, I'm Jennifer and in this lesson, we'll go over three uses of "though."
嗨,我叫詹妮弗。在这一课中,我们将学习“though”这个词的三种用法。
You'll learn how to use it correctly and naturally in spoken and written American English.
你将学会如何在美国英语的口语和书面表达中正确且自然地使用它。
We use "though" as a contrast word.
我们使用“though”作为表示对比的词语。
It helps us create a contrast between two ideas.
这有助于我们在两个观点之间形成对比。
Grammatically, it can be a conjunction or an adverb.
从语法角度来看,它既可以作为连词,也可以作为副词使用。
Let's look at "though" as a conjunction.
让我们把 “though” 视为一个连词来研究一下。
"Though" can connect an adverb clause with an independent clause to create a complex sentence.
though”可以用来连接一个副词从句和一个独立从句,从而构成一个复合句。
Though I'm not a big soccer fan, I've enjoyed watching the World Cup.
虽然我不是足球迷,但我还是很喜欢看世界杯比赛的。
The first part is the adverb clause, the dependent clause.
第一部分是一个副词从句,也就是一个从属从句。
The second part is the independent clause, the main clause.
第二部分是一个独立从句,也就是主句。
"Though" is functioning as a conjunction, a subordinating conjunction.
though”在这里起连接词的作用,具体来说是一种从属连词(用于引导从句)。
You may know one or two more words that function like "though."
你可能还会知道一两个其他词,它们的用法与“though”类似。
They sound similar.
它们的发音听起来很相似。
Do you know them?
你认识他们吗?
Although, even though.
尽管如此……
These are also subordinating conjunctions that help us create adverb clauses.
这些也是从属连词,它们帮助我们构建副词从句。
Take a look.
看一看吧。
Although I'm not a big soccer fan, I've enjoyed watching the World Cup.
虽然我不是足球迷,但我还是很喜欢看世界杯比赛的。
Even though I'm not a big soccer fan, I've enjoyed watching the World Cup.
虽然我并不是一个狂热的足球爱好者,但我还是很喜欢看世界杯比赛的。
Note how in writing, all three require a comma to separate the adverb clause from the main clause.
请注意:在书面表达中,这三个例子都需要使用逗号来将副词从句与主句分隔开来。
"Though" is more conversational than the other two.
Though”这个词比另外两个词更口语化(更适合日常对话使用)。
Some consider "even though" more emphatic.
有些人认为“even though”这个短语表达得更为强烈(或更为坚决)。
It emphasizes the contrast.
这突显了两者之间的对比。
Here's what's important.
以下是重要的内容:
You have to know two ways to build these kinds of sentences.
你必须掌握两种构建这类句子的方法。
We can flip the parts around.
我们可以把各个部件的位置互换过来。
We can put the main clause first.
我们可以把主句放在前面。
"Though" can add on a contrasting idea.
尽管”一词可以引入一个与之形成对比的观点。
In fact, putting the adverb clause with "though" second is probably more common, especially when we don't really need to emphasize the contrast.
事实上,将含有“though”的副词从句放在句尾的情况更为常见,尤其是在我们并不需要特别强调这种对比关系的时候。
I've been watching a lot more soccer this summer, though I still don't understand all the rules.
这个夏天我看了很多足球比赛,不过我仍然不太明白所有的比赛规则。
Again, "though" introduces the adverb clause, the contrasting idea.
同样,“though”用于引出副词从句,表达对比的观点。
Not all writers use a comma to separate the clauses when the adverb clause comes second.
并非所有作家在副词从句位于句末时都会使用逗号来分隔各个从句。
But my preference is to use it when there's a contrast and especially when that contrasting idea is a long clause.
不过,我更倾向于在存在对比关系的情况下使用它——尤其是当那个形成对比的观点是一个较长的从句时。
Guess which other word we could use in this sentence in the same position.
猜猜我们还能在这个句子的同一个位置使用哪个单词。
But.
但是……
"But" also creates a contrast, right?
但是(“but”),也会形成一种对比,对吧?
I've been watching a lot more soccer this summer, but I still don't understand all the rules.
这个夏天我看了很多足球比赛,不过我还是不太明白所有的比赛规则。
The difference in meaning is that "though" creates a surprising contrast.
这两个词在含义上的区别在于:“though”能够营造出一种出人意料的对比效果。
The difference in grammar is that "though" is a subordinating conjunction in a complex sentence.
在语法上的区别在于:“though”是一个用于复杂句中的从属连词。
