在这个视频中,你将学习如何改善自己的英语发音。
And at the end of this video, I'll give you a link to a webpage that contains free pronunciation exercises.
在这段视频的最后,我会提供一个网页链接,该网页上包含免费的发音练习内容。
First of all, why is it so hard for you and I to improve our English pronunciation?
首先,为什么对我们来说,提高英语发音水平会如此困难呢?
Well, one of the reasons is that we can't make some sounds in English because those sounds are not present in our native languages.
嗯,其中一个原因是:我们在英语中无法发出某些音素,因为这些音素并不存在于我们的母语中。
So when we speak English, we replace those difficult sounds with some other sounds that we can make.
因此,当我们说英语时,我们会用其他更容易发出的声音来替代那些难以发音的音素。
That's why we mispronounce words all the time.
这就是为什么我们总是会把单词读错的原因。
So the first step to improving your pronunciation is to learn to pronounce all of the main sounds in English correctly.
因此,提高发音水平的第一步就是学会正确发出英语中的所有主要音素。
So how do you do that?
那么,你该怎么做呢?
Well, one way to do that is to find some pronunciation exercises for each sound in English and just practice.
嗯,其中一个方法就是为英语中的每个发音找到相应的练习材料,然后进行练习即可。
After you've practiced making all the sounds, you will have the perfect pronunciation.
在练习发出所有这些音素之后,你就能拥有完美的发音了。
Now, I really wish it were that simple.
现在,我真希望事情真的有那么简单就好了。
But it's not.
但事实并非如此。
There is a problem.
出了一个问题。
And the problem is the sounds in English are very similar to each others.
问题在于,英语中的许多单词发音非常相似。
Now why is that a problem?
那么,为什么这会成为一个问题呢?
Well...unlike babies, adults don't have the ability to easily distinguish between all the different sounds in a foreign language.
嗯……与婴儿不同,成年人没有能力轻易区分外语中所有不同的声音。
So when you hear two different sounds in English, if those sounds are similar, you brain might perceive those sounds as the same.
因此,当你在英语中听到两个不同的声音时,如果这两个声音听起来很相似,你的大脑可能会将它们视为同一个声音。
That's why learning to make each sound separately may not work.
这就是为什么单独学习如何发出每个音素可能并不奏效的原因。
In the past, I couldn't hear the difference between these sounds.
在过去,我无法分辨这些声音之间的差异。
So to me, the words "cheap" and "sheep" sounded the same.
因此,在我看来,“cheap”(便宜的)和“sheep”(羊)这两个词的意思是一样的。
If I did an exercise teaching how to pronounce these words, I would mispronounce all of them.
如果我设计一个练习来教授如何发音这些单词,那我肯定会把所有单词的发音都发错。
And I would believe that I was pronouncing those words correctly even though that wasn't true.
我甚至会相信自己能够正确地发音那些单词,尽管事实并非如此。
And that's the biggest challenge when it comes to improving your pronunciation.
这就是在提高发音水平方面所面临的最大挑战。
If you can't hear the difference between two sounds, how can you learn to produce each sound correctly?
如果你无法分辨两种声音之间的差异,又怎么可能学会正确发出这两种声音呢?
So what should you do?
那么你应该怎么做呢?
Fortunately, there's a method for overcoming this problem.
幸运的是,有一种方法可以解决这个问题。
This method is based on a number of research studies.
这种方法基于多项研究结果。
These studies suggest that if you have
这些研究表明,如果你有……
trouble differentiating between two sounds or two
难以区分两种不同的声音。
words, the best way to train your brain to recognize the difference is to listen to the words at the same time.
要想训练大脑识别这些词语之间的差异,最好的方法就是同时聆听这些词语。
I mean not exactly at the same time but you listen to one word immediately after the other.
我的意思是,并不是完全同时发生,但你会一个接一个地立刻听到这些单词。
If you hear those words at the same time, you are more likely to notice the difference.
如果你同时听到这两个词,就更有可能注意到它们之间的区别。
And after you've noticed the difference, you can then practice pronouncing those words.
当你注意到这些单词之间的区别后,就可以练习如何正确发音了。
There are many free pronunciation exercises that apply this idea.
有许多免费的发音练习,这些练习都运用了这一教学理念。
These exercises contrast one sound with another.
这些练习旨在将一种声音与另一种声音进行对比。
And here is what such an exercise might look like.
以下就是这种练习可能呈现的样子。
This exercise contrasts the "AA" sound with the "EH" sound.
这个练习将 “AA” 音与 “EH” 音进行对比。
This kind of exercise has three key benefits: Firstly, it makes you aware that the words in each pair are pronounced differently.
这种练习有三个主要好处:首先,它能让你意识到每对单词的发音是不同的。
Secondly, in an exercise like this, the presenter tends to exaggerate when pronouncing words, making it even easier to hear the differences.
其次,在这样的活动中,演讲者在发音时往往会夸大某些音节的发音程度,从而更容易让人分辨出不同单词之间的发音差异。
And lastly, since similar words are presented together for comparison, it reduces the tendency for a non-native speaker to pronounce two different words the same way.
最后,由于相似的单词会被放在一起进行比较,这有助于减少非母语者将两个不同的单词发成相同发音的倾向。
