Do you ever feel like you aren't making much progress with your English?
你是否有时觉得自己在英语学习上没有取得太大的进步?
Maybe you feel stuck in that infamous intermediate plateau where it's really hard to motivate yourself to keep going.
也许你正陷入那个令人沮丧的“中间平台期”——在这个阶段,你很难找到继续前进的动力。
I've seen it with so many of my students over the last 17 years of teaching.
在过去的17年里,我在很多学生身上都观察到了这种现象。
Well, I've got good news because today I'm revealing one of the most powerful learning secrets out there,
嗯,我有个好消息要告诉大家:今天我将揭示一个非常强大的学习秘诀。
the AT -20 rule and how you can apply it to your English studies.
AT-20规则及其在英语学习中的应用方法。
But here's the kicker, most English learners are doing it all wrong and that's why their progress feels slow.
但关键在于:大多数学习英语的人方法都错了,这就是为什么他们的进步显得如此缓慢的原因。
Sound familiar?
听起来很熟悉吧?

By the way, my name is teacher
顺便说一下,我的名字是“老师”。
Tom and I teach fresh modern British English to people around the world who want to learn about the language and culture of the UK.
我和汤姆负责向世界各地希望了解英国语言和文化的人教授现代英语。
Okay, so what is the AT -20 rule?
好的,那么AT-20规则是什么呢?
Well, the AT -20 rule, also known as the Pareto principle, says that 80 % of results come from just 20 % of the input.
嗯,AT-20法则(也被称为帕累托原则)指出:80%的成果是由仅20%的投入所带来的。
So how does that apply to learning English?
那么,这如何应用于学习英语呢?
When it's simple, you don't need to learn all the words to be fluent,
当语言表达简单时,你并不需要掌握所有的词汇才能流利地使用这门语言。
you just need to focus on the right words.
你只需要专注于那些合适的词语即可。
And this leads me to my first tip.
这就引出了我的第一个建议。
Tip number one, focus on high frequency words and phrases.
第一条建议:重点学习高频出现的单词和短语。
Most English learners make a big mistake.
大多数学习英语的人都会犯一个严重的错误。
They focus on low frequency words and long vocabulary lists that they hardly ever use.
他们主要关注那些使用频率较低的单词,以及那些他们几乎从不使用的、篇幅较长的词汇列表。
I had a low level student once called Hannibal.
我曾经教过一个水平较低的学生,他的名字叫汉尼拔。
He was a lovely guy from Saudi Arabia,
他是一个来自沙特阿拉伯的非常友善的人。
but he spent so much time trying
但他花了太多时间去尝试……
to learn British idioms like under the weather or spanner in the works that he forgot to learn the basics.
他试图学习一些英国习语(比如 “under the weather” 或 “spanner in the works”),但却忘了先学习最基础的知识。
Now don't get me wrong, I love idiomatic phrases like these, but they weren't very useful for Hannibal when he couldn't do the basic things,
现在别误会我的意思——我确实很喜欢这类习语表达,但对于汉尼拔来说,这些表达并没有太大用处;毕竟他连最基本的事情都做不了啊。
like ordering a coffee in the school canteen or making plans with fellow students.
就像在学校食堂点杯咖啡,或者和同学们一起制定计划一样简单。
Sure, he could make me laugh by saying a teacher Tom, this coffee costs an arm and a leg.
当然,他可以通过说“老师,这咖啡可贵得离谱啊”之类的话来逗我笑。
And I'd start laughing, but when it came to ordering at the cafe,
我本来会开始笑的,但到了在咖啡馆点餐的时候……
he had to use just the word coffee and a series of hand gestures like this to get what he wanted.
他只能使用“咖啡”这个词,再加上一系列手势来表达自己的意思,从而得到自己想要的东西。
And well, it's a bit of an issue.
嗯,这确实是个有点麻烦的问题。
You see what Hannibal needed to do was learn high frequency words,
你看,汉尼拔需要做的就是学习高频出现的词汇。
the functional words, the phrases that people actually use in everyday life.
这些功能词,以及人们在日常生活中实际使用的短语。
For him studying in an English school, he needed phrases to order coffee and make plans with fellow students.
对于他这样在一所英语学校就读的学生来说,他需要掌握一些用于点咖啡以及与同学安排活动的表达方式。
So to order coffee, he could have learned a phrase like please may I have or could I have?
因此,为了点咖啡,他可以学习一些表达方式,比如“请问我可以点一杯吗?”(Please, may I have a cup of coffee?)或者“我可以点什么吗?”(Could I have something to drink?)
Basic stuff, right?
都是些基本的知识,对吧?
Maybe topic vocabulary like oatmeal, reusable cup, double shot to have in or to take away.
也许需要用到一些与主题相关的词汇,比如“燕麦片”(oatmeal)、“可重复使用的杯子”(reusable cup)、以及“双份咖啡”(double shot,既可以当场饮用,也可以带走)。
If he was making arrangements with fellow students, he could have learned little phrases like would you like to for an invitation?
如果他当时正在和其他同学一起安排活动的话,他本可以学到一些用于邀请的简短表达方式,比如“你愿意参加吗?”(Would you like to…?)
Or perhaps how about and then the gerund?
或者,再考虑一下动名词的形式怎么样?
If he was wanting to say yes to something, he could have learned yeah, that sounds great.
如果他想对某件事表示同意,他本可以说“是的,那听起来很棒”。
And if he wanted to politely say no, he could have learned I'd love to but but he didn't learn any of those things.
如果他想礼貌地拒绝的话,他本可以了解到“我很愿意帮忙”,但他根本没学到这些该知道的事情。
