In my modern received pronunciation accent, the letter R is only pronounced when it comes before a vowel sound.

So when you see an R before a consonant sound, or at the end of a word with no sounds after it,

simply don't try to pronounce it.

Here are some examples.

Repeat after me.

There is no er sound in them.

In these words, the letter R is followed by a consonant sound.

In stressed syllables like this, we just pronounce the long vowel sounds er as in earth,
