Yes, that's right.
Welcome everybody.
I'm Mark, the British English teacher on High Level Listening and together with Kat, who's our American English teacher,
we've put together some interesting differences between American and British pronunciation.
This can help you understand why we sound different and also help you choose the accent that you want to speak when you speak English too.
One of the things that we pride
ourselves on here at High Level Listening is reading and we're applying to every single comment we get here on YouTube.
So as we go through some of these differences, we'd love to hear from you guys in the comments.
Do you think you sound more British or more American?
Do you find the American accent a bit easier to understand or is the British accent easier on the ear?
Let us know.
We love hearing from you guys.
Okay, so let's start looking at some differences.
First, we should mention that some of these examples will be generalizations.
There isn't one British accent for the whole of the UK, but what we're going to use is the closest thing to a standard accent,
which is Southern English, which is also my accent.
And of course, the American accent can vary from city to city, even from the countryside to the big city,
but we're going to use kind of a fairly neutral accent for American pronunciation, and that's how I usually sound.
Let's get started with probably my favorite one, the letter R, the letter R.
In American English, we say the R, R, and it's really don't try this.
Oh, that's the L sound.
We're going to push our tongue to the back of our mouth.
We say the R very clearly.
If you want to Google this for more information, the Rotik R,
R -H -O -T -I -C, the Rotik R, or this very hard, this loud R.
In British English, we have a different sound.
It's called the non -rotik R.
R, the letter R.
With the British English, you don't even need to move your tongue.
Just open your mouth like you're at the doctor or the dentist.
Say R, R,
说“R,R……
that's the letter and the sound.
So I'm going to intro a couple of words so you can hear the similarity with my American accent.
Har,
哈,
market, worker,
bird, teacher.
Whereas the British R will be car, market, worker,
