Hey guys, welcome to Lingua Marina.
大家好,欢迎来到 Lingua Marina!
Today we're going to talk about differences between British and American accents.
今天我们将会讨论英式口音和美式口音之间的差异。
There are a couple of things I want to tell you before we start.
在我们开始之前,有几件事我想告诉你们。
First of all, I'm not a native speaker.
首先,我不是英语的母语者。
I was born and raised in Russia, lived in Russia, so I was 25,
我在俄罗斯出生并长大,也在俄罗斯生活。当时我25岁。
then I moved to the US and all my life.
后来我搬到了美国,并在那里度过了我的整个人生。
I've been coping different accents because when I went to the UK for the first time when I was 14,
我一直都在努力适应各种不同的口音。因为在我14岁第一次去英国的时候,
I was amazed by the standard British accent and I tried to copy it.
我被那种标准的英式口音所吸引,于是试着模仿它。
And then I came to the US and I understood that people don't get what I'm saying if I use my kind of British accent.
后来我来到了美国,才意识到:如果我使用那种典型的英式口音,人们根本听不懂我在说什么。
So I started learning American accent.
于是我开始学习美式口音。
And as a person who's been doing that for a while,
作为一个已经从事这项工作有一段时间的人,
my most favorite thing is to dig
我最喜欢的事情就是挖掘(或探索、发掘等)。
into different details and understand what people do with their lips and with their mouth as in order to produce those sounds.
人们会用嘴唇和口腔做出各种不同的动作,从而发出各种声音。了解这些动作的具体细节,有助于我们更好地理解人们是如何通过这些部位来发出声音的。
Another thing I want you to remember
还有一件事我希望你们能记住。
is that there are a lot of
是不是有很多……
different accents in Great Britain and so something that we're going to learn today is something that I was taught at school.
在英国,人们使用不同的口音;今天我们要学习的内容,其实是我在学校里学到的。
This is sometimes called Reciprianization.
这种现象有时被称为“Reciprianization”(即“互惠化”或“反向转化”)。
If you come to the US, California, people would have one accent,
如果你来到美国加利福尼亚州,那里的人们都会使用同一种口音。
people in New York would have a
纽约的人们会……
different accent and it's really up to you what accent you want to adopt and you don't have to adopt any accent.
不同的口音……其实到底选择哪种口音完全取决于你自己;你也可以选择不使用任何特定的口音。
It's just, you know, the matter of your preference.
这只是个人偏好的问题罢了。
As for myself, I decided to stick to an American accent just because I live in California.
至于我自己,我决定继续保持美式口音——毕竟我住在加利福尼亚州。
But again, it's really up to you.
但无论如何,最终的决定还是取决于你。
Just be consistent.
只要保持一致性就好。
If you choose one type of accent, stick to it to make your life easier.
如果你选择了一种口音,那就坚持使用这种口音,这样会让你的生活更轻松。
Now let's dig into those tiny differences.
现在,让我们仔细探讨一下这些细微的差异吧。

Rule number one, if you want to sound more British, don't pronounce every single R.
第一条规则:如果你想让自己的发音更具有英国口音,就不要把所有的字母“R”都发出来。
This is not true for every accent out there, but in received pronunciation in Great Britain,
这并不适用于所有种类的口音;不过在英国的通用发音标准中,情况确实如此。
you would only pronounce the R that is followed by a vowel.
只有当 R 后面跟着元音时,你才需要发这个 R 的音。
For example, real, right, arrange, umbrella, curious.
例如:真实的、合适的、排列整齐的、像伞一样的、充满好奇心的……
In these words, R is followed by a vowel and this way we pronounce it.
用这些话来说,字母 “R” 后面总是跟着一个元音,我们就这样发音它。
Interesting.
有意思。
But there are also words where R is in the end of the word and is not followed by anything.
但也有一些单词,其中字母 R 位于单词的末尾,其后没有任何其他字母。
In this case, you do not pronounce it.
在这种情况下,你不需要发这个音。
For example,
例如,
I intentionally try to sound more British when explaining this because in America, we would always say work,
我在解释这个问题的时候,故意让自己的语气更具有英国特色。因为在美洲,我们通常会用“work”这个词来表示“工作”。
beer, weather, color.
啤酒、天气、颜色。
But if you want to sound more British, you pronounce these words without pronouncing R, color,
但如果你想让发音更具有英国口音,那么在读这些单词时应该省略字母“R”的发音,比如“color”(颜色)。
