Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson where I'm going
to tell you what not to do if you're using subtitles to learn the English language.
And I should say before I start, this is all just my opinion.
The seven things I'm going to talk to you about today are just my opinion.
There's no scientific evidence saying that what I'm telling you is correct.
It's just how I feel about this.
The first thing I would tell you not to do is.
Don't have the audio set to English and the subtitles in your own language, and don't have
the audio in your own language and the subtitles in English.
I say don't.
Again, this is just my preference.
I find if I mix languages, if the audio is in one language and the subtitles are in another,
it's just too confusing for me.
What I would suggest you do is find a copy of the transcript in English beforehand.
Or find a summary of the video in your own language beforehand and read it, and then watch the video.
I just find if you have mixed languages, if you have the audio in one language and the subtitles in another,
it's just way too confusing.
The second thing I would tell you not to do is don't have the subtitles on all the time.
If every video you watch you need to have subtitles on, you need to probably find videos that are easier for you to understand.
A really good measure of your listening ability is whether you can turn subtitles off on some videos and understand them.
If you need subtitles on all the time, you're simply practicing your reading, and your listening isn't developing.
So you might want to find simpler videos.
You might want to slow the video down, but if you can't understand some of the video with the subtitles off.
Then you have a little bit more listening practice to do to get there.
You can even go down to lower levels, like watch videos made for kids.
There's no shame in watching videos made for kids, even if you're my age.
So the second thing you shouldn't do, don't watch videos with subtitles on all the time.
It's a really good way to figure out what you should do to make your listening practice better.
So find videos that you can understand with the subtitles off, and maybe watch some harder videos with the subtitles on.
Number three, don't assume because you understood a video while watching with the subtitles on that you understand spoken English.
These are two different things and they do complement each other, but one doesn't mean the other.
What I mean by that is this: if you watch five videos and you have the subtitles on with every video that you watch,
and you read the words as they are being spoken, your reading skills are top-notch and you can then think to yourself.
My listening skills are amazing, but that would be a mistake.
So it's important that you take time to isolate the audio from the subtitles.
It's important to kind of watch the video once with the subtitles off to make sure you actually understand it.
So number three, don't assume because you've watched a video with subtitles on that your listening skills are amazing.
Make sure you watch it again with them off, and then you'll really know.
The fourth thing I would tell you not to do is don't watch a video just one time with the subtitles on.
I know I've already mentioned this in number three, but I think it's
