Now, in today's lesson, as I said, we're going to talk about the differences between American
现在,在今天的课程中,正如我所说,我们将讨论美国……(原文此处内容似乎不完整或有所遗漏)。
and British English.
以及英式英语(British English)。
Why American?
为什么选择“美国”这个主题呢?
Why British?
为什么选择“英国”这个主题呢?
Well, simply put, these are the most widely spoken forms of English.
简单来说,这些就是使用最广泛的英语变体。
Of course, we have Canadian, we have Australian, we have New Zealand English,
当然,我们有加拿大英语、澳大利亚英语以及新西兰英语。
but today we're just going to focus on American and British English because they're the most common.
但今天我们只关注美式英语和英式英语,因为这两种英语最为常见。
And in today's lesson, we're going to talk about accent and pronunciation.
在今天的课程中,我们将讨论口音和发音的问题。
We're going to talk about grammar, about vocabulary, and of course about spelling.
我们将讨论语法、词汇,当然还有拼写。
So in American and British categories.
因此,这些奖项分为美国组和英国组。
Now, let's start with accent and pronunciation.
现在,让我们先从口音和发音开始讲起。
If you're wondering, I'm actually not American.
如果你想知道的话,其实我并不是美国人。
I'm Canadian.
我是加拿大人。
I was born in Vancouver, Canada.
我出生于加拿大的温哥华。
And even though I'm Canadian, the Canadian accent sounds very, very similar to the American accent.
尽管我是加拿大人,但加拿大的口音与美国口音非常相似。
So if you didn't know I was Canadian, you might have guessed I was American.
如果你之前不知道我是加拿大人,那么你可能会猜我是美国人。
For the purposes of our lesson today, you can pretend I have an American accent because to be honest,
为了今天课程的需要,你可以假装我带有美国口音;说实话,我的英语确实带有一些美国口音的特点。
there's no big difference.
其实并没有太大的区别。
Now, there are many different accents in both the United Kingdom and in the US.
现在,无论是英国还是美国,都有许多不同的口音。
For example, in the UK, you have Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, all these different accents.
例如,在英国,有利物浦、曼彻斯特、伯明翰等地,人们说着各种不同的口音。
And in the US, you might have a southern accent.
在美国,你可能会带有南方口音。
You might have a Boston accent, a New York accent.
你可能会有波士顿口音或纽约口音。
But in today's lesson, we're going to focus on the standard forms.
但在今天的课程中,我们将重点学习标准形式(即规范的表达方式)。
This doesn't mean that one accent is better than the other because that's not true.
这并不意味着某种口音比另一种更好,因为事实并非如此。
But since there are so many accents, I want to keep this as simple as possible,
但由于存在太多不同的口音,我希望尽可能让这个解释保持简单明了。
and I want to talk to you about the standard accents that you might learn in school.
我想和你谈谈你在学校里可能会学到的那些标准口音。
So when we talk about the standard American accent, we're talking about something called General American English or GA.
当我们谈论标准的美国口音时,实际上指的是“通用美式英语”(General American English,简称GA)。
The standard British accent is called received pronunciation or RP.
标准的英式口音被称为“Received Pronunciation”(简称RP)。
Now, I have a list of words and I have their American pronunciation and their British or received pronunciation.
现在,我有一份单词列表,其中包含了这些单词的美式发音以及英式或公认的发音。
Now, as I said before, I am Canadian, so I speak more like an American.
正如我之前所说,我是加拿大人,因此我的说话方式更接近美国人的表达习惯。
I'm going to try to pronounce the received British pronunciation of these words as well.
我也会尝试按照收到的这些单词的英式发音来读它们。
But of course, I'm not British and a native speaker from the UK could definitely pronounce them much better than I could.
不过,我当然不是英国人;一个以英语为母语的英国人肯定能够比我更好地发这些单词的音。
But I'll give it a try.
不过我还是会试一试的。
