Don't shoot yourself in the foot!
别自己害自己啊!
Set yourself up for success!
为自己创造成功的机会吧!
I'm Emma from mmmEnglish and this video is for English learners, specifically, those who want to speak in English more,
我是艾玛,来自“mmmEnglish”团队。这个视频是为英语学习者准备的,尤其是那些希望更多使用英语进行交流的人。
who want to perform better in English conversations.
那些希望在英语对话中表现得更好的人。
Even if you're not interested in the
即使你对……不感兴趣,
three ways to be a successful English
成为优秀的英语学习者的三种方法
speaker, you will definitely learn about this interesting idiom and how to use it at the end of this video.
演讲者,您肯定会在本视频的结尾了解到这个有趣的习语以及如何使用它。
The first way that English learners shoot themselves in the foot is when they say that they'll do something but then they don't.
英语学习者最常见的犯错方式就是:他们承诺会做某件事,但实际上却并没有兑现自己的承诺。
They don't follow through.
他们不会把事情做到底(或者:他们不会坚持完成自己的承诺)。
And maybe you think Emma, that's no big deal.
也许你会想:“艾玛,这没什么大不了的。
But it is.
但事实确实如此。
You're adding to this huge, potentially overwhelming pile of things that you have not done,
你正在不断往这个已经堆积如山、且可能让人感到不堪重负的“未完成事项清单”里添加新的内容。
that you haven't ticked off and all of these little things are sitting there, they're waiting for you to take action.
所有那些你还没有处理掉的问题,以及所有这些小细节,都还静静地待在那里,等待着你采取行动。
I know from personal experience that that huge pile of things creates guilt, it creates shame, it creates a whole lot of negative self-talk.
根据我的个人经验,那堆堆积如山的物品会让人产生内疚感、羞耻感,还会引发大量的负面自我对话(即对自己负面评价的念头)。
See Emma, you never follow through.
看看艾玛,你从来都不会把事情做到底(或者说:你总是半途而废)。
How will you succeed if you can't even complete a course that you got for free?
如果你连一门免费获得的课程都无法完成,又怎么可能取得成功呢?
To put this into context, think about learning English online.
为了更好地理解这一点,可以想象一下在线学习英语的过程。
There is so much material out there that you can access.
市面上有大量的资料可供你查阅和使用。
You can practise with online websites, you can download free worksheets, you can watch YouTube videos, you can sign up for free courses and challenges.
你可以通过在线网站进行练习,可以下载免费的练习题,可以观看 YouTube 上的视频,还可以报名参加免费的课程和挑战活动。
You can even pay for courses.
你甚至可以为课程付费。
There is no shortage of information.
信息并不缺乏。
In fact, Everything that you need to learn grammar and vocabulary already exists online and a lot of it is completely free to access.
事实上,你学习语法和词汇所需的一切资源都已经在网上找到了,而且其中很多资源是完全免费可供使用的。
So how come you're not fluent yet?
那你为什么还没有达到流利的程度呢?
The problem is that most students run around grabbing all of these free resources and stashing them away somewhere so that
问题在于:大多数学生四处收集这些免费资源,然后把它们藏到某个地方,结果就是……(后文未完成)。
next week they can start but they're not staying focused, they're not getting it done and even more importantly,
下周他们可以开始工作,但他们无法保持专注,也无法完成任务。更重要的是……
not putting those learnings into practice which is actually the hard part.
真正困难的部分在于:未能将这些学到的知识应用到实际中去。
You can collect as many resources as you like but unless you do something with them,
你可以收集任意数量的资源,但除非你对这些资源采取实际行动(比如使用它们、处理它们等),否则这些资源就只是闲置在那里而已。
complete the workbook, finish the course and even better,
完成练习册,完成整个课程;更重要的是……
use what you were studying in real
将所学的知识应用到实际生活中。
conversations so that you can make mistakes and you can get stuck and find your way out of trouble
进行这些对话的目的是让你能够犯错、陷入困境,然后自己想办法摆脱这些麻烦。
and try out all these new phrases and expressions that you've been memorising.
试着使用所有那些你刚刚记住的新短语和表达方式吧。
Without all of that, well what's the point?
如果没有这一切,那还有什么意义呢?
Another way to shoot yourself in the foot, set yourself a huge, really general goal.
另一种会让自己陷入困境的做法,就是为自己设定一个极其宏大且过于笼统的目标。
If you do that, you will never notice your progress.
如果你那样做,就永远无法察觉到自己的进步。
You will never feel success.
你永远无法真正感受到成功的滋味。
What is your goal?
你的目标是什么?
To speak English better?
为了更好地说英语?
If this is your goal, you're shooting yourself in the foot.
如果这就是你的目标,那你无异于是在自毁前程。
Goals need clear time frames, measurable outcomes and they need to be achievable.
目标需要明确的时间框架、可衡量的成果,并且必须是能够实现的。
For example, speaking with someone in English once a week throughout October, November and December.
例如,在整个 10 月、11 月和 12 月期间,每周用英语与某人进行一次交流。
