Hello, this is Jack from To Fluency.
您好,我是来自 To Fluency 的杰克。
Now, in this lesson, you're gonna learn the phrases you actually need
现在,在这一课中,你将学习到那些真正需要的短语。
for small talk in English, small talk.
用于用英语进行闲聊……就是普通的闲聊而已。
And by the end, you're not just gonna know what to say, you're going to
到了最后,你不仅会知道该说什么,还会……(此处原文未完整表达后续内容)。
know how to keep the conversation going so it doesn't fall flat after
知道如何让对话持续进行下去,避免对话陷入僵局。
the first question, so it doesn't get awkward after the first question where you're thinking, "What should I say?
第一个问题吧,这样在第一个问题之后就不会显得尴尬了——毕竟你可能会在想:“我该说什么呢?
What should I say
我应该说什么呢?
Let me tell you why I'm making this podcast.
让我告诉你们,我为什么要制作这个播客。
Because after working with thousands of English learners, and also listening to what people have issues with when it comes to learning English,
因为在与成千上万的英语学习者合作的过程中,以及听取了他们在学习英语时遇到的各种问题的反馈之后,
there's one thing that people often tell me.
人们经常对我说一件事。
It's this, "Jack, I can talk about my job.
就是这句话:“杰克,我可以谈谈我的工作。
I can give a presentation.
我可以进行一次演讲。
I can have a conversation sometimes about a topic.
有时候,我能够就某个话题进行交谈。
But when somebody first sees me and talks to me for the first time and says, 'Hey, how are you?'
但是,当有人第一次见到我、第一次和我交谈,并对我说“嘿,你好吗?”的时候……
Or, 'How was your weekend?'
或者,也可以问:“你的周末过得怎么样?
I freeze.
我冻僵了。
I freeze, and I don't know what to say."
我愣住了,不知道该说什么。
Now, if that happens to you, you're not alone, and small talk is one of the hardest parts of speaking a foreign language.
如果这种情况发生在你身上,请不要担心——你并不孤单。闲聊(即非正式的、轻松的对话)确实是学习外语时最困难的部分之一。
People think that this is harder than grammar or harder than learning new vocabulary, and the reason for this is simple.
人们认为这比学习语法或新词汇更难,原因其实很简单。
Small talk isn't so much about what you say, it's about the rhythm of how you say it,
闲聊的重点并不在于你说了什么,而在于你说话时的语调与节奏。
and it's also about not freezing in that moment.
同时,这也意味着在那一刻不能让自己陷入僵局(或:不能让自己失去行动的能力)。
I'll explain all about this in a moment, but first, let's start with a quick definition.
我稍后会详细解释这一切,但首先,让我们先来快速了解一下相关概念的定义。
By small talk, what I mean here is just light, casual conversation
所谓“闲聊”,我指的是那种轻松、随意的谈话。
The type of conversation you have with a neighbor, a colleague, a stranger
你与邻居、同事或陌生人进行的对话类型
at a coffee shop, someone you meet at a party or a language exchange,
在咖啡店里,或者在聚会上、语言交流活动中遇到的某个人……
or just someone who you run into who you've not seen for a while.
或者只是某个你偶然遇到的人——你已经有一段时间没见过他/她了。
The conversation isn't deep.
这次谈话并不深入。
It's not about big topics.
这并不是关于那些重大的、宏观的话题。
It's not about a deep conversation about politics or something like that.
这并不是关于政治之类的深入讨论。
Instead, it's this social glue that makes everyday life feel comfortable.
事实上,正是这种“社会粘合剂”让日常生活变得舒适惬意。
And what I mean by that is it's a way for you just to get by when you meet someone and to make that small talk,
我的意思是,这是一种在遇到别人时用来打招呼、进行简单交谈的方式。
that small conversation And before I give you some really useful phrases, and what I recommend
在那次简短的谈话之后……在我向你们介绍一些真正实用的表达方式以及我的建议之前……
you do is that you copy these phrases and repeat them out loud.
你需要做的就是将这些短语抄下来,然后大声重复它们。
But before I give you those phrases, I wanna share one thing that will change how you do small talk forever.
但在我告诉你们那些表达方式之前,我想先分享一件事,这件事会彻底改变你们进行闲聊的方式。
It's gonna change the way you do small talk forever And it's this, small talk isn't a script,
这将会永远改变你进行闲聊的方式。其实,闲聊根本不需要遵循任何固定的“剧本”或模式。
so it's not so much what you remember and know what to say.
其实,关键并不在于你记住了什么,或者知道该说什么。
It's more like something similar to a tennis match because most learners try to answer questions.
这更像是一场网球比赛——因为大多数学习者都会尝试回答问题。
So in small talk, most people just try to answer questions.
在闲聊中,大多数人只是试图回答问题而已。
So if somebody says, "How was your weekend?"
那么,如果有人问:“你的周末过得怎么样?
You might say, "Good, thanks."
你可能会说:“很好,谢谢。
