More Climate Change Vocabulary- Part 2 - Our role in slowing Global Warming · Simple English Videos
Hi, I'm Jay and welcome to this second Simple English videos lesson on the language of climate change.
Today we'll talk about the vocabulary we can use to join the effort to reduce global warming.
Now much of today's lesson is based
on the live conversation I held on Zoom with some of our Simple English videos subscribers in the very hot summer of 2026.
We have these live sessions every Sunday, one week at 9am Greenwich Mean Time and the next week at 6pm Greenwich Mean Time.
The sessions are free of charge and everyone is welcome to join.

This week we had guests from Vietnam, from Italy, from Serbia and from Spain.
The Europeans in our group were just entering the third heat wave of the summer with wildfires already devastating parts of Spain and France.
Each of us contributed our ideas on what we can do to slow global warming.
The one of the things we can do is support government policies in each of our countries to increase the planting of green spaces.
A list of studies showing how planting
trees in urban areas can reduce temperatures
and thus help reduce the impact cities have on global warming is in the description of this video on YouTube.
Here's another thought from our guest, Irina, from Serbia.
We need to start with education to
educate our children what to do and
教育我们的孩子应该做什么;
what not to do and for example
is that in my area in the schoolyard children collect plastic average plastic bottles during the weekend time and to recycle all of these bottles.
Why does recycling plastic bottles help in the fight against global warming?
Well because it takes 70 % less energy to make a plastic bottle from previously used plastic
then it does to make a new one.
The more plastic we recycle the less
fuel we have to burn to make
new plastic bottles and that means the
less carbon dioxide is pumped into the atmosphere to trap the heat of the sun as part of the greenhouse gas effect.
So thank you Irina, recycling helps.
And another suggestion from Irina along the
same lines is to use refillable metal water bottles thus reducing our reliance on manufactured plastic bottles we use and discard.
But a larger issue arose in our discussion on Sunday and that was about education.
Teaching our kids to act responsibly to help reduce global warming is surprisingly controversial
a point I made in the discussion.
Do we teach energy conservation?
Do we teach recycling?
Do we teach climate change in our schools in America?
It has become in some places politically impossible to talk about climate change and the human contribution to global warming.
It's become a political issue so it's difficult to teach it in some schools in the United States.
It's important to educate young people to get them concerned about the problem but what you said about the states,
the political issues, I think unfortunately in many countries the politicians are the ones who have to be really involved.
That's Susanna from Spain, the politicians.
