Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson about heat waves.
This is day one of a heat wave here in Ontario, Canada.
Jen and I are not looking forward to it.
In fact, I'm outside this morning at 10:30am in the shade because it's already 29 degrees
and it's going to be 34 degrees today and 35 degrees tomorrow.
If you don't know what a heat wave is,
a heat wave is when the temperature is in the mid-30s during the day and in the mid-20s at night.
And that's in Celsius, by the way.
So what we're looking at is highs in the mid 30s during the day, highs in the mid 20s tonight,
tomorrow, Thursday as well.
I think the heat wave is going to break.
When the heat wave breaks, it means it ends sometime during market.
And, unfortunately, when heat waves end, often there is a big storm as well.
So we really hope that either happens sooner or later.
But anyways, welcome to this English lesson about heat waves.
An extended period of time, two or three days or more, where it's just really, really hot.
In this lesson, I'll teach you some more English phrases we use to talk about heat waves and hot weather.
So I'm sitting here in the shade because over there the sun is beating down.
In English, when you say the sun is beating down, you're describing a day where the sun is brighter than normal,
or it seems brighter than normal and it seems hotter than normal.
I'm sitting here because it's nice and cool.
I'm in the shade of this tree.
If I went over there where the sun is beating down, I think I would overheat.
I think I would get really, really hot really quickly.
So I think I'm going to stay here instead of over there where the sun is beating down.
Sometimes in English, we exaggerate a bit to describe the heat.
And there's one English phrase that I think is kind of funny, and it's
the phrase, it's so hot you could fry an egg on the sidewalk.
Basically, what you're saying is if you got an egg and you cracked it onto the sidewalk, the egg would cook.
The egg would fry right there on the sidewalk.
Now, this sidewalk isn't actually that hot.
It is, again, an exaggeration, although I have seen people actually do it when it's like 37 or 40 degrees.
And if the sidewalk is black or a dark color and gets really, really hot.
But if you want to exaggerate a bit to describe the heat, you could say it's so hot out,
you could fry an egg on the sidewalk.
So there are two versions of this next phrase to describe a hot day.
The first one is to say, it's like an oven out there.
And the second one is to say, it's like an oven out here.
Now, as you can probably tell, it depends where you are standing.
If I come into the air conditioned house and it's 36 degrees Celsius outside, I could say to Jen,
